OrbandCrossWelcome to our March newsletter. I start this months update with the backdrop of the tragic events of this last couple of weeks. First of all the stabbing of Yousef Makkie in Hale and now the act of terrorism in New Zealand where 49 Muslims were killed whilst at Friday Prayers. Whilst thoughts and prayers go from our faith communities to all those involved in these events, we should also look to ourselves and the roles we play in our communities to work together to understand the reasons behind these tragic events and help with solutions. Remember our Prayer Chapel is open between 10 and 12 every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning for personal prayer and reflection.

Prayer for Christchurch, New Zealand

God of peace
We pray for those caught up in the events in New Zealand, for those killed and wounded, and for those who will mourn.
We pray for the people of the emergency services as they respond, and for community leaders and faith leaders as they work to heal broken communities.
Soften the hearts of those who are motivated by hate and bring peace to your precious people of New Zealand.

In Christ’s name. Amen

Michaela Youngson, President of the Methodist Church in Great Britain

Lent has begun - have you given anything up? If so, I pray you will find strength in God to see it through. If, like me, you always find it hard to find something to give up, why not try the 40 Days 40 Items idea that is going around. Each day find something you no longer need and at Easter take your 40 items to a local charity shop. Alternatively, collect 40 items of food or personal hygiene products and donate them to the Foodbank here a TMC. This can make a lot of difference to a lot of people in our community who are struggling at the moment.

Through lent we have a number of groups meeting for discussion. The Methodist Circuit has three groups looking at a study based on the film The Way. These will run an Monday afternoons, Tuesday mornings and Friday evenings. Contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more details. We also have the Timperley Churches Together Friday Lent Lunches and Sunday Evening Ecumenical Lent Group at Holy Cross at 'I Daniel Blake'. Plenty to choose from.

Before our next Newsletter here at TMC we have Tiny Praise (11:30 on 18th March and 15th April) and Messy Easter (8th April at 11:30). We would love to see you there. We also have our Big Bash service on the 24th March at 6:00pm. If you don't like the usual, formal style of worship, maybe this is for you.

The Marathon passing through the village on the 7th April. The church will be open and serving refreshments. Why not come along and cheer on those who are raising money for various charities, and if you're taking part, well done.

On Saturday 30th March our local GMP PCSO Barbara Smith will be in the Coffee Corner between 10 and 12, and on Saturday 6th April we have a Craft sale with Coffee and Cake, again 10 till 12 in Coffee Corner.

Finally we would all like to say a big 'HI' to our newest member here at TMC, Joshua Levi Watts born on the 25th February. A massive congratulations to Catherine and Andy.

Boys Brigade AnchorThe company was started in 1937 by the first captain Frank Lord but the session wasn’t completed because the new church was opening. It then restarted in September 1938 using the old chapel and ran continuously for 80 years (I know nothing about any disruptions during WW11)

The Life Boys’ started not long after the BB until the two merged in the 1960’s

During those 80 years we ran annual weeklong summer camps for the older boys, Life boy/Junior section weekends, numerous, Easter camps often jointly with the Girls Brigade, Cleveland (and Border) hikes and in 1965 a number of us attended the camp in Perth Scotland for the worldwide Boys Brigade.

From what I understand there were twelve captains (including myself) and numerous other offices and life boy leaders.

Following the failure of the company to open for the 81st session it was decided to organize a re-union of May 11th followed by a church service to be arranged in the next circuit plan where we will “laydown our Colours”

The national BB at Felden Lodge want us to write our story for the archives so at the re-union we hope to gather together stories, experiences, photographs and a long a list as possible of where and when our ventures out of Timperley Methodist Church have taken us

  • Life boy/Junior weekends
  • BB summer camps
  • Cleveland hike experiences
  • Joint camps/weekend away with the GB

TMCWelcome

The Link is a long standing ladies group at Timperley Methodist Church, originally formed when ladies of over 40 in the Young Wives group were deemed too old to be thus called!

It was suggested that this new group became a link between the two groups and there are currently about 50 members.  The Young Wives group no longer meets.

The Link meets on alternate Mondays at 7:30pm, either in the church or in the Cornerstone Room.  There is a strong Christian element, with every meeting beginning with a hymn and a prayer and ending with an epilogue.

The Link fosters friendship, has interesting speakers on many different topics and enjoys the occasional coach outing.  A Christmas lunch is held at a hotel.

Some of the talks recently have been on scams, authorship and the Aspey's Journey of Discovery.  The No String Puppets from Altrincham Methodist Church entertained and social evenings have included an auction and a games evening.

There has always been an emphasis on raising money for charity and the church. Many concerts featuring Loose Change and other groups have been organised to do this.  Thousands of pounds have been donated over the years.  Several speakers also donate their fee to a charity or the church.

All meetings end with tea and coffee and lots of chat.

A warm welcome awaits - just come along.

Out of those 25, I have been to 24, and honestly I was very cross with my parents when I had to miss my last holiday club as a child in 2002. Since then, I have been a young helper, and a leader every single year. I can now proudly say that I (mostly) oversee the whole week, from its very beginnings right through to the celebration on the Friday night. It takes a whole team to run the holiday club, and without the committed leaders we have it would be impossible. They do a fantastic job planning and leading their groups, as well as joining in the fun (and keeping up with my high levels of general excitement...). We are incredibly lucky to have a team of young people who come to be ‘Crew Members’ throughout the week, and again, without them, holiday Club just wouldn’t be the same. They do very much the same job as the leaders, they’re just a little(!) younger and dare I say it, mostly less tired as the week goes on (maintained with sugary snacks and drinks and some incredible socials throughout the week)!

This year’s holiday club is called ‘Beach Party’, a collection of stories about Jesus on the Beach (well, near water...). This was planned at last year’s holiday

club (Hero Quest - Heroes in the Bible), inspired by some blue and yellow fabric we had (honestly!).

We will be sharing the following stories with the children and young people:

BeachParty

Monday  -  The Baptism of Jesus

Tuesday - The Calling of the Disciples

Wednesday - The Wise Man and The Foolish Man

Thursday - Feeding the 5000

Friday - Walking on Water

As we noticed there was a general theme of obedience in every story, we have paired each day with a ‘Beach Rule’, as follows:

Monday - Bring Joy

Tuesday - Listen When You’re Called

Wednesday - Be Careful Where You Build Your Sandcastle

Thursday - Share Your Picnic

Friday - Be Brave

I personally am very excited about this year, as I am (more and more it seems) with every year, especially sharing stories about Jesus with up to 100 children (we had slightly more last year but I struggle to say no!), and having lots of fun in the process.

Dates: 29th July 2019 - 2nd August 2019

TimperleyMCThis coming weekend we celebrate our Church Anniversary.  Like most of us the church celebrates its life and witness in the community through the years.  The existing church building here in the centre of the village has been here over 83 years, the first 'opening' service taking place on the 24th November 1937, but did you know that Timperley Methodist Church has been worshipping in the community since 1833, that's 186 years!

WhittWalk

You can imagine that over that number of years there have been many who have used, been part of, been baptised, married and had funeral services here.  With a large Sunday School, youth organisations, Whitsuntide Walks of Witness, playgroups etc. not to mention Sunday Services themselves there must be quite a few memories out there.  Recent posts on our Facebook page have seen people comment about their memories.  This year sees the 25th anniversary of the very popular Holiday Club.  See our separate article for further details and booking a place.
